Historical Connection

Red Deer Elks & the Elks of Canada

Origins and Legacy

Founded on May 14, 1924, as Lodge No. 85 under the Grand Lodge of Canada, the Red Deer Elks were chartered with 121 members and a vision to advance “Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity”.

The lodge’s early efforts included acquiring multiple community halls, culminating in their current location at 6315 Horn Street (dedicated in 1961).

National Alignment

  • While independent from U.S. Elks organizations, the Canadian Elks share a fraternal ethos. Red Deer’s initiatives, such as the Purple Cross Fund, reflect the national mandate to unify local charitable efforts under a cohesive strategy.
  • Red Deer is part of District 9 Red Deer 85, Leslieville 351, Ponoka 561, Sundre 338, Gwendale 579 and other Alberta communities to host joint events and semiannual meetings.

Leadership and Evolution

  • Notable leaders like Howard Biles (1960s) and managers like Jollie McKinley stabilized the lodge during economic challenges, embodying the Elks’ resilience.
